As with all of our coffees, our decaf is something we’re really proud of! It tastes delicious and is produced with skill and care. It’s our aim to always provide a tasty decaf rich in flavour so no one misses out on a daily coffee ritual.
Ozolotepec is one of the more remote coffee-growing region in the world where our import partners, Osito, source coffee. Located 7.5 hours south of Oaxaca City, deep in the Sierra Sur mountains, the journey there is long and often unpredictable, with roads that may or may not be passable. The Zapotec indigenous communities here are also quite isolated, and many residents do not speak Spanish, which adds to the region’s cultural uniqueness and inaccessibility. Despite the challenges, the trip is well worth it to reach the home of some of the finest coffees in Mesoamerica.
Over the past seven years, Osito has worked hard to establish a presence in Mexico, seeking out exceptional coffees from Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Puebla while also building meaningful opportunities for farmers and communities. In recent years, their purchasing in Ozolotepec has steadily grown, and this year marks an exciting milestone - the first time Osito has ever taken coffees from Ozolotepec and decaffeinated them.
Sourcing from Ozolotepec presents unique challenges. It is, aside from Burundi, the most isolated origin Osito works with, which makes it difficult for producers to secure fair prices and reach markets that value quality coffee. With such small-scale production, multiple producers’ coffees are combined into community microlots, ensuring volumes that are both worthwhile and representative of the region’s exceptional quality. Through these efforts, Osito continues to bridge distance and difficulty to bring the remarkable coffees of Ozolotepec to the wider world.
This is the first time we at Vote are offering a Mexican decaf, and we’re very excited to share it. Roasted as an omni, it delivers a perfectly balanced profile that works beautifully as both espresso and filter. Often described as a “full meal” around the cupping table, we taste the savoury-sweet depth of butternut squash, a smooth nuttiness reminiscent of pine nuts, and a bright, fruity freshness like kumquat. It’s a syrupy, sweet, clean coffee following our previous fruity, natural decaf.
